Bernadette Marie Weiss Hayes, 85, of Fredericksburg and Rehoboth Beach, Del., passed away Saturday, April 20, 2013, at her home in Fredericksburg.
Mrs. Hayes was born in Washington, D.C., where she attended St. Mary's Catholic grade school and Immaculate Conception Academy high school. She was the widow of Marine Corps Maj. John F. Kerr Jr. and James T. Kerley.
Before moving to Fredericksburg in 1971, she lived in Alexandria, where she worked in the food catering business with Mr. Kerley and then was a secretary with the CIA. In Alexandria, she was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and PTA groups at her children's schools. She also was a secretary at Johnson and Wimsatt Lumber Co. in Springfield.
Mrs. Hayes was an active member at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fredericksburg as a lector, in the Council of Catholic Women and the Magdalenes, as well as in local senior citizens, Red Hats and Gold Star Wives. When in Rehoboth Beach, she attended St. Edmond's Catholic Church. While her first husband was in the Marine Corps, she was active in the Officers' Wives Club.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas E. Hayes and son John Kerr, both of the home; daughter Sherry Kerr McFee, son-in-law J. Miles McFee, and two granddaughters, Ashley and Amanda McFee, all of Rochester Hills, Mich.; three nieces; cousins; and several stepchildren, stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Gladys Cook Weiss; and brother Robert A. Weiss.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, April 26, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at noon in Quantico National Cemetery.
