I am writing to express my disappointment at the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors' failure to fund an expansion of a racist mural in their meeting room.
Despite more than two years of organizing around this effort to be inclusive of all people in our commemoration of the past, and despite the cost of the additional panels being a mere of the cost of the original mural--which the 1989 board paid $12,000 to have painted in their meeting room 20 years ago--the local government has declined this opportunity to address that board's grave historical oversight.
All the people on the mural are white. The board must reconsider this view of history, because minorities and people of color are outraged.
