Melvin Leroy Jones, 90, of Fredericksburg passed away Monday, April 29, 2013, at his home.

Born in New Haven, Conn., and raised in Lancaster, Pa., he moved to Fredericksburg to raise his family after he retired. Mr. Jones retired as a sergeant major in the U.S. Army after 24 years of service. After retiring from the Army, he taught ROTC in Washington, D.C., for an additional 24 years. During his teaching career, his Cadet Corps received many honors and awards. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site), where he enjoyed singing in the senior choir.

Survivors include his children, Melvin Leroy Jones Jr. of Louisiana, Patricia Ann Jones of California, Pamela Denise Deane of Partlow and Derrick W. Jones, Anthony C. Jones and Crystal Anita Walker, all of Fredericksburg; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian S. Jones.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 6, at Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site), with the Rev. Lawrence Davies officiating. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery with full military honors.
