I was dismayed, but not surprised, at the Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors decision to approve the raceway complex in Thornburg. They remind me very much of the movie "Waiting for Guffman": small-town actors thinking they have hit the big time. As a movie, it is wildly amusing, in real life, tragically pathetic.
I have never seen such a group of glad-handing, back-slapping, mealy-mouthed politicians in all my life. We cannot get a commuter rail station, but we can get a racetrack.
And what an economic boom it will create, adding some badly needed fast-food options, or perhaps some Interstate 95 interchange cheap hotels. Both in keeping with the "Technology Corridor" that was created at that end of the county.
But given the cumulative IQ of this batch of politicians, that's about right. Last year I sat in on a special permits hearing in Caroline County. While the permit was denied, all one had to do was listen to the tearful testimonies of the neighbors of the State Fairgrounds to know that noise was a factor that they simply couldn't control and didn't foresee. The Board of Supervisors admitted that it was worse than they thought it would be. It did nothing to attract commerce and creates a giant traffic hazard.
It seems as if these local politicians won't be happy unless they completely muddle every I-95 interchange. State Route 3 and Massaponax have been turned into nightmares, but no one has ever been held accountable. Just a whole lot of "Gosh, didn't see that coming."
I must point out that this raceway is being run out of Prince William County for noise ordinance violations. Doesn't anyone else see how this defies logic?
