Frieda Anne Rifkind, 89, died Sunday, June 16, 2013, at her home in Stafford County.
She was the daughter of Gordon and Edna Bohn Snow, the sister of Mary Jane Snow Hopkins, and the widow of Herbert Richard Rifkind.
She is survived by her daughter, Rachel, and son, Josh; grandsons Joshua Bryant Rifkind and Franklin Jacob Rifkind; and her great-granddaughter, Trista Hunter Rifkind. She was predeceased by grandsonJeremy Snow Rifkind.
Born on Dec. 3, 1923, in Salt Lake City, Frieda Anne spent an adventurous childhood exploring the mountains and countryside of Utah on her patient black horse, Lindy.
She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. After the war, she worked in the Cataloging Division for the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and met Herbert Richard "Rif" Rifkind, who was a historian for the U.S. Army Combat Development Command. They were married on March 7, 1952, and settled in Stafford County at Rifkind Farm, known simply as "The Farm," in the late 1950s.
Frieda Anne was a librarian at Barden Elementary School at Fort Belvoir before becoming a technical writer for the Corps of Engineers. She retired from federal service in 1967, after the death of her husband, and devoted the next decades to raising her children and managing her farm and horses. For several years she wrote book reviews for the Free Lance-Star and worked part time at a local bookstore, The Bookcase.
Frieda Anne loved books, dogs and horses. She especially enjoyed the Kentucky Derby and waited each year for another Secretariat to sweep the Triple Crown. Her home was a refuge for countless friends who enjoyed lively conversation, wonderful food and the beauty and charm of her beloved farm, where she lived happily for 56 years.
