Eugene D. O'Neill

Retired Army Col. Eugene D. O'Neill, 70, of Locust Grove passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at Hughes Home in Fredericksburg following a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

Col. O'Neill was born in Hackensack, N.J., to the late William and Bette O'Neill. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1965 and earned a Master of Science in electronics engineering from the University of Illinois. He served in the Army Signal Corps for more than 27 years and was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster), National Defense Service Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster), Vietnam Service Medal (Third Oak Leaf Cluster) and Meritorious Service Medal (Second Oak Leaf Cluster).

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Judi O'Neill of Locust Grove; his sons, Thomas (Thresa) of Herndon and Sean (Eleanor) of Dunedin, New Zealand; his daughter, Heather O'Neill (Bob Brown) of Locust Grove; seven grandchildren, Shaun, Cullen, Madalyn, Chiara, Edith, Cayden and Fay; brother William of Ogdensburg, N.J.; and brother-in-law Stephen Peidl of Champaign, Ill.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, at Christ Episcopal Church, 8951 Courthouse Road, Spotsylvania. Interment of ashes will immediately follow at Christ Church cemetery.
