Nora R. Rogers, 95, of Fredericksburg passed away Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at Woodmont Center, Stafford County.
Mrs. Rogers was born Sept. 12, 1917, in Beaver Meadow, N.Y., a daughter of the late Howard and Velma Hicks Robinson. Upon graduation from South Otselic High School, South Otselic, N.Y., in June of 1935, she received her New York State Regents college entrance diploma. Mrs. Rogers graduated from the State University of New York, State Normal School at Cortland, on June 13, 1939, with a provisional certificate in kindergarten and common branch subjects. She received her permanent certificate in kindergarten and common branch subjects from the University of the State of New York on April 27, 1949.
Mrs. Rogers began her career in elementary education as a teacher at South Otselic Central School in 1939. In 1940, she became a first grade teacher at Brookfield Central School, Brookfield, N.Y., where she continued teaching first grade until her retirement in 1975. Throughout her career, Mrs. Rogers dedicated her life to the crucial fundamental instruction of countless young children in the important skills of reading, writing and arithmetic.
Mrs. Rogers was predeceased by her husband, Gerald F. Rogers; brothers Gerald C. Robinson and Donald H. Robinson; and sisters Bernice L. Davis and Dorothy L. Brown.
Survivors include her son, Geary H. Rogers and his wife, Donna L. of Stafford; grandchildren Nicholas A. Rogers of Alexandria, U.S. Army Spec. Christopher A. Rogers, presently serving his country in Vilseck, Germany, and his wife, Rebecca, and Kathleen R. Cavender and her husband, U.S. Army Capt. Michael Cavender, presently serving his country at Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colo.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at Covenant Funeral Service, 4801 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg.
A service will be held at noon Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the funeral home chapel. A committal service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Brookfield Rural Cemetery, Brookfield, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, the family request expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to the Fredericksburg SPCA, 10819 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22408; or to the Fredericksburg Salvation Army, 2010 Lafayette Blvd., Fredericksburg, VA 22401.
