Please refrain from using the phrase "on the Northern Neck" as it appeared in an article recently ["City looks to preserve escaped slave's house," Aug. 25].

The late C. Jackson Simmons of Irvington, a noted attorney and author, wrote, "[I]n the Northern Neck is an idiom which enjoys the ancient and current sanction of most writers who have an instinctive intimacy with this unique peninsula." His ancient examples are William Byrd I & II, Robert Beverley, Floyd Vickers Fithian, and Mr. Justice Story in an 1813 U.S. Supreme Court decision. His more current examples are "Stronghold" author Miriam Haynie and the Northern Neck's longest-serving state legislator, Sen. Robert O. Norris Jr.
