I was shocked recently when a woman I know, who crusades for state and federal issues, told me she doesn't vote in local or even state elections. This is a well-educated, intelligent person. How can she not see the connection between what goes on in Washington and what happens in Richmond or Stafford?
I am writing in support of the local Democratic candidates for the Board of Supervisors and the Democrats running for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and House of Delegates.
The Stafford BoS is composed of six Republicans and one Independent. Some of these supervisors talk about making growth pay its own way, but they have dismantled tools put in place by Democrats.
Another thing the Republicans have done while in office is repeal the code of ethics the Democrats adopted to discourage supervisors from getting too cozy with developers.
The current board has been bending over backwards to please the building industry, well beyond what might have been expected during the recession. We're going to be paying for this in years to come with overcrowded schools, inadequate roads, and insufficient services.
Our BoS should reflect the community and its concerns. To add balance, vote for the Democratic candidates: Mara Sealock, Laura Sellers, and Valerie Setzer.
At the state level, the Democratic candidates are the moderates. Richmond shouldn't be run by the Tea Party. Vote for McAuliffe, Northam, Herring, Futrell, and O'Halloran.
