Field hockey coverage: Sports, great; Editorial, not so good

I want to thank The Free Lance-Star sports department for covering field hockey this season. These young women deserve the coverage, as they spend as many hours training for their sport as do other athletes.

I also want to thank the sports department for covering Fredericksburg Academy field hockey. Despite starting a number of younger players, the Falcons repeated as state champions [in Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II] this year. That makes three state champions from this area. An impressive feat.

Equally unimpressive is the editorial department's failure to read its own paper and recognize the Falcon girls' achievement with the other teams in the Nov. 24 editorial, "Playing the Field."

It is unfortunate that the editorial writer determined that the Fredericksburg Academy girls were not worthy of The Free Lance-Star's praise.

For my part, as a proud father of two players and a field hockey fan in general, I say congratulations to all three state champions: Well done!
