Leon Balla

Leon Balla, 93, a longtime resident of Stafford County, passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Leon was born in Aurora, Ill., on Sept. 19, 1920, to Frank and Mary Balla.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1964, and was a decorated veteran of World War II and the Korean War, receiving the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.

In 1968 Mr. Balla moved to Stafford to be a Christmas tree farmer. He was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church for 45 years, and he generously contributed his time and resources to the church's pantry and food bank.

After the passing of his wife, Emuel Lee, Leon met and married Naomi Dale in 2004.

Leon is survived by his wife, Naomi Balla; his daughter, Kathleen Huddle of Fredericksburg; grandchildren Kasey Bentley and Amanda Justus-Gunn, both of Fredericksburg, Kim Morris of Culpeper and Scott Harwood of Farmville; and numerous nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews of Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Cody Magargal; and his sister, Mary Tihay.

Leon's family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels- Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle.

In lieu of flowers, Leon's family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Antioch United Methodist Church Food Pantry, 138 Kellogg Mill Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22406.
