'Bad taste' led reader to rise to defense of bikers

As a reader of The Free Lance-Star for more than 30 years, not much surprises me, and normally I let things roll. Unfortunately, I found Donnie Johnston's column in such bad taste I had to speak up.

It's a shame that he doesn't seem to realize that these noisy, grizzled, traffic blocking, gas-sucking, pollution-spewing bikers have fought to keep this country free so he can have the freedom to disparage people who spend most of their off-time riding to relax and raise money to help less-fortunate people like the families of fallen military and public servant heroes.

I know several people have suggested firing Mr. Johnston and I know that defeats freedom of speech and press. Before firing Mr. Johnston, have him go on a Frazier Mason ride, or some other benefit ride, and follow through to the faces of the families with no spouse, or cancer patients, or any of the other charities we ride to support in an effort to clog up the roads that are lined with people cheering us on.

We ride to feed the needy. We ride to bring toys to children. We ride to show families that their husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters didn't die in vain. We ride because we care.
