Elizabeth J. Storey

Elizabeth Joann Clark Storey, 85, loving and beloved wife of Eugene "Gene" Storey, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at home.

Joann had a lifelong love of literature. In mid-life, she returned to college to earn her bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Missouri- Kansas City. She expressed her love for books by becoming a devoted English teacher of seventh and eighth grade children, whom she inspired to write beautiful poems and stories. Her devotion to her students is timelessly expressed in the poem below, composed by one of her eighth-grade classes. The poem is memorialized on a plaque presented to Mrs. Elizabeth Storey in 1984:

Moving to Fredericksburg in 2003, she was a volunteer tutor at St. Mary's Academy for several years before her health failed.

Joann enjoyed singing and music, which was shared by Gene. Joann's mother said she never had to wonder where Joann was because she could always hear her singing. Gene and Joann were active in the choir of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Kansas City, Mo. One of their special memories was singing before Pope John Paul II in the Vatican. Upon moving to Fredericksburg, they joined the Spotsylvanians and later, the Rappahannock Chorale Society. Joann's ever-present smile showed her joy, energy and enthusiasm for singing at every spring and Christmas concert as she took her customary place in the front row of the alto section. Joann and Gene were members of St. Mary Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, where they sang in the adult choir. Both of them sang with the Falls Run Singers, entertaining residents of local nursing homes as well as friends and neighbors in the Falls Run Active Living Community.

Born in Miami, Joann was the middle child of Joseph Henry and Mary Elizabeth Satchwell Clark. She was preceded in death by her parents and two siblings, Joseph Raymond and Martha Mary.

Survivors include her devoted husband of 63 years, Gene; two children, Maureen and Eric; and three grandchildren, Emily Storey Weaver, Mattison Storey and Caleb Storey.

A memorial service and interment are privately reserved for the immediate family. Family, friends and neighbors are asked for only their prayers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joann's memory to the choir of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Kansas City; or the Rappahannock Chorale Society in Fredericksburg.
