Undocumented deserve shot at happiness, too

On Dec. 20, I received Rep. Rob Wittman's weekly update, and he quoted the Declaration of Independence "[t]hat all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

Unfortunately, Mr. Wittman does not believe that all are created equal or that all have a right to liberty or the pursuit of happiness when it comes to undocumented people. This holiday season, I do not want to see more children separated from their parents. Undocumented parents came to this country because they want to provide a better life for their children.

Some people might say that undocumented people broke our law. But we know that a parent does whatever it takes to provide his or her children a better life. I think we forget that we often move in search of job opportunities. Why should others be denied the same chance to improve their living situation through hard work?

You can help us to keep families together by contacting your representative, wishing him a happy holiday and reminding him to support immigration reform for the members of our community without legal papers.

This holiday season I want to thank all those who helped us this year to ask Congress to pass immigration reform and keep families together. Thanks to all who contribute to our society regardless of their legal status. I want to thank the people in our military who fight for our freedom and whose family lives in this country without legal papers.

Everyone who lives in this country and contributes to our society deserves the opportunity to be free and pursue happiness for themselves and their children.
