Katie Bailey Jones

Katie Lee Bailey Jones, 97, formerly of Coalwood, W.Va., departed this life surrounded by family at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013.

She was born in Elk Creek on April 10, 1916.

Mrs. Jones was a resident of Coalwood for more than 70 years and devoted most of her adult life to volunteer community service. In November 2006, she moved to Fredericksburg to be near her youngest son, Herman.

In Coalwood, Mrs. Jones was a dedicated community activist and organizer for programs to improve the quality of life for disadvantaged families and to eliminate domestic violence and abuse. Additionally, she was credited with over 2,000 hours of volunteer service at local hospitals. In recognition of her selfless dedication and commitment to service, on the occasion of her 80th birthday then West Virginia Gov. Gaston Caperton honored Mrs. Jones with the "Distinguished West Virginia Citizen" award.

She was an active member of Mount Zion Methodist Church in Coalwood, a historical black church, where she managed financial and maintenance affairs, arranged and conducted youth activities and counseling programs and helped to organize ceremonies and services.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her parents, Garfield and Lura May Bailey; her husband, Horace Jones; and five sisters and brothers, Clara Mines, John Bailey Sr., Lillian Bailey, Mary Alean Bailey and Samuel Bailey.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas A. Young Sr. of Atlanta, Weldon M. Jones of Buffalo, N.Y., and Herman H. Jones and wife Charlotte of Fredericksburg; her grandchildren, Thomas Jr., Terry, Tyler, Weldon Jr., Cory, Kipling, Marland and Carmen; many great-grandchildren; and a host of other family members.

Visitation and viewing will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at John Stewart United Methodist Church, 102 Jones St., Bluefield, W.Va., A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Route 20, New Hope Road, Bluefield, WV.
