Thomas M. McCabe

Thomas M. "Tommy" McCabe, 61, formerly of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., most recently of Fredericksburg, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013.

He must have wanted to spend New Year's Day with his heavenly family, which includes his father, Richard; mother Joan; and brother Michael.

Tommy was born on Oct. 4, 1952, in Poughkeepsie to Richard R. and Joan A. Hoffman McCabe. He attended Poughkeepsie High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served his country with great pride aboard both the USS Wasp and USS Intrepid aircraft carriers.

Tom was devoted to his Christian faith, as a teenager he even aspired to be a priest. He always enjoyed attending services and led many Bible study classes in his home.

Tom started his career as a chef and managed several restaurants throughout New York. He was a member of the National American Legion and a disabled veteran. Tom had a passion for fishing, horse racing and pinochle. He was an accomplished bowler and struggling golfer. One of Tom's greatest loves was spending time with his grandnephew, Noah. He will forever be remembered as a "gentle giant."

His transition into heaven was made easier with the devoted love he received from his wife of nearly two years, Debbie.

Tom is survived by his wife, Deborah Stead McCabe of Fredericksburg; three daughters, Janis, Kaylee and Heather of Rochester; brothers John (Janet) of Hyde Park, N.Y., and Patrick of Perrysburg, Ohio; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
