Lillian Blatt

Lillian Blatt, 96, of Fredericksburg passed away early on Sunday morning, Jan. 5, 2014, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Born in New York City on Sept. 16, 1917, she and her husband, the late Dr. Martin Blatt, moved to Fredericksburg in 1945, where Dr. Blatt set up and maintained an optometry practice until his passing in 1978.

She was a devoted, loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

She touched so many lives with her compassion, her honesty, her generosity, her good advice and her good sense of humor. She spread good cheer to those she came into contact with, whether at the supermarket, pharmacy or at the doctor's office.

She loved Fredericksburg and the local synagogue community. She was active for many years in the Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Shalom. She loved to cook and she loved good food. But most of all, she loved company and was most happy when she was surrounded by friends and family.

She is survived by her sons, Elliot, of Potomac, Md., and Derek of Valley Cottage, N.Y.; four grandchildren in California, Maryland and New York; and four great-grandchildren in California.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Beth Shalom Synagogue, 805 Lyons Blvd., in Fredericksburg, with 1 p.m. interment at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Donations in her honor may be made to the Lillian Blatt Memorial Fund at Congregation Beth Shalom.
