Speaker Howell is looking out for the best interests of the commonwealth. A good example is the op-ed he penned in Sunday's Viewpoints ["A time for magical thinking," Jan. 5].
I am sure The Free Lance-Star letters to the editor page will be full in the next several days with attacks on the Speaker's well-reasoned position.
The simple fact is that Medicaid is broken. In spite of the efforts of the hospital industry, special-interest groups and even editorial writers, Mr. Howell is not going to be party to throwing good taxpayer money at a bureaucratic and corrupt mess that defines Medicaid.
Let us find a better way to help those in need, as the Speaker argues.
Certainly, let's not live in a fool's paradise and expect that the administration that didn't shoot straight on Obamacare will refrain from saddling Virginia taxpayers with an ever-increasing share of the failed Medicaid expenses.
While others play fast and loose with our money, Speaker Howell does not.
