Virginia citizens, like myself, can be comforted by the fact that Bill Howell is Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates.

Speaker Howell is looking out for the best interests of the commonwealth. A good example is the op-ed he penned in Sunday's Viewpoints ["A time for magical thinking," Jan. 5].

I am sure The Free Lance-Star letters to the editor page will be full in the next several days with attacks on the Speaker's well-reasoned position.

The simple fact is that Medicaid is broken. In spite of the efforts of the hospital industry, special-interest groups and even editorial writers, Mr. Howell is not going to be party to throwing good taxpayer money at a bureaucratic and corrupt mess that defines Medicaid.

Let us find a better way to help those in need, as the Speaker argues.

Certainly, let's not live in a fool's paradise and expect that the administration that didn't shoot straight on Obamacare will refrain from saddling Virginia taxpayers with an ever-increasing share of the failed Medicaid expenses.

While others play fast and loose with our money, Speaker Howell does not.
