John C. Harcharek

John C. Harcharek, 79, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2014.

John was a native of Nanticoke, Pa. He graduated from Mansfield University in 1957. He lived in New York state before moving to Virginia in 1980. John retired from education in 1997 after nearly 40 years of service, including teaching, coaching and both single-school and district-wide administration. His school systems included Horseheads High School, Horseheads, N.Y.; Alfred Almond Central School, Almond, N.Y.; Northern Adirondack Central School, Ellenburg, N.Y.; Quantico Dependent's School System, Quantico; and Woodland Academy, Montross.

He occupied some of his retirement time by working at the Fredericksburg Golf Center. John had many pastimes that included hunting, fishing, carpentry and golf. He served with the Elks, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club and both the Horseheads, N.Y., and the Spotsylvania County Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jan; five sons, Jon Harcharek of Princeton, N.J., Jay Yelle of Locust Grove, Jeff Yelle of Ellenburg Depot, N.Y., Tom Harcharek of Fredericksburg and Jerry Yelle of Spotsylvania; sister Marge Poveromo of Toms River, N.J.; brother Bob Harcharek of Barrow, Alaska; 14 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; five nieces; two nephews; 10 great-nieces; three great-nephews; and one great-great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his son David Harcharek.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday, Jan. 15, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
