Bernard W. Oravec

Bernard Wayne "Bernie" Oravec Sr., 74, of Locust Grove passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at Mary Washington Hospital.

He had been retired for nine years and was a past president of Lake of the Woods Lions Club. Bernie enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports, poker and traveling.

Born in Bedford County, Pa., on Sept. 8, 1939, he was a son of the late Albert Oravec and Helen Miller Oravec.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Elisabeth "Beth" Oravec; his children, Bernard Oravec Jr. and wife Andrea of Manassas, Kenneth Oravec and wife Nicole of Morgantown, W.Va., Kimberly Strickland and husband Brad of Chantilly and Sydney Turner and husband Steven of Lake Ridge; and five grandchildren. Survivors also include his sisters, Carol Kociban of Windber, Pa., and Penny Cooper and husband Kevin of Libertyville, Ill.; his brothers, Richard Oravec of Cairnbrook, Pa., and wife Penny of Winchester and Roger Oravec and wife Kim of Lititz, Pa.; and nine nieces and nephews.

Bernie will be remembered as a wonderful father, loving husband and great friend. He touched many people with his serving spirit and willingness to help in the Lake of the Woods community through the Lions Club. He will be truly missed by family and many friends.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at Lake of the Woods Church, Locust Grove, with a reception to follow.
