Joseph Earl Spalding

Joseph Earl Spalding, 88, of the Fancy Farm community in Kentucky, passed away Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Jackson Purchase Medical Center in Mayfield, Ky.

He was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society. He graduated from St. Jerome High School on May 2, 1943. He was a retired carpenter, and he was a farmer. Mr. Spalding was a World War II Army corporal (Tec/5) veteran, having served on the European front where he received the American Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Germany.

Mr. Spalding is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marietta Overstreet Spalding of the Fancy Farm community; two daughters, Deborah Jo Spalding (Michael J.) Buschermohle of Knoxville, Tenn., and Margaret Dean Spalding (Timothy Owen) Neel of King George County; four granddaughters, Christine, Stacy, Amanda and Amy; sister Carolyn Ann (Kenneth) Ramsey of Murray, Ky.; and brother James Conrad (Rozella) Spalding of Fancy Farm, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin John Spalding and Mary Helen Roberts Spalding; his older brother, William Carl Spalding; and two younger sisters, Mary Hazel Spalding Hayden and Marjorie Dean Spalding.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the St. Jerome Catholic Church in Fancy Farm, Ky., with Father Darrell Venters officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Jerome Church cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the Brown Funeral Home in Mayfield, Ky., where prayers will be said at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
