Edna Roughley

Edna Roughley, 85, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Dogwood Village in Orange County.

Edna was born May 4, 1928, in Leigh, England, to Harry and Ethel Roughley. She is survived by her nephew, Dale Selkirk of Canada, and her cousin, Eva Roughley of Leigh.

Edna immigrated to Canada as a child with her mother and sister. Her mother's death, when she was only 8, left her in the care of her elder sister, the late Bertha Selkirk, and her husband.

Edna immigrated to the U.S. in 1951 and became a citizen in 1956. Living first in Chicago, she became friends with the late Faye Okerson. Later they decided to move to Virginia.

Edna's career as a secretary gave her flexibility, and she found employment in both the private and public sectors, including a long service with the U.S. Army.

Edna was a committed Christian and loved singing traditional sacred music in her strong alto voice. She supported spreading the Gospel throughout the world.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, at Grace Memorial Church, 1600 Stafford Ave., Fredericksburg, with Pastor Emeritus Harlan E. White officiating.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the church, which she long loved and supported.
