Wirt W. 'Ned' Hall

Wirt W. "Ned" Hall, born Sept. 2, 1925, departed this world on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at the age of 88.

Ned volunteered for the Coast Guard in World War II, serving on convoy escorts across the Atlantic. He re-enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War. He served his country and community and family. He always had a smile to share and never met a stranger.

Ned was a retired construction manager. He retired in 1992 as assistant regional manager from the Reinforced Earth Co. in Atlanta. He was also Past Master of Fredericksburg Masonic Lodge 4, a Royal Arch Mason, a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Kena Patriot Shrine Club.

He is survived by his partner of 20 years, Linda Olinger; daughter Martha Hall (and her partner, Connie Hall); and son Rob Hall (and his partner, Mary Byrd) and their mother, Edith Hall; and daughter Wendy Hall-Wood (and husband Stephen Wood), whose mother, Gail Lyons-Bailey, preceded Ned in death. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Mary Katheen Hall; and siblings Eddie T. Hall of New York, Marion Linwood Hall of Richmond, Mary Hall Mitchell of Richmond and Virginia Hall Woodruff (and husband James Woodruff) of Kentucky. He was loved by numerous nieces and nephews. Also celebrating his life are Ruth Olinger Aldridge and her husband and children and Gene Garrard Olinger Jr. and his wife and son.

Visitation will be on Sunday, Feb. 2, from 3 to 5 p.m., with Masonic Rites conducted at the conclusion of visitation, atBliley's Funeral Home, 8510 Staples Mill Road, Richmond, VA 23228. It is open to all.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the funeral home, followed by a graveside service with military honors at Greenwood Cemetery, 12609 Patterson Ave., Richmond.
