I want to thank Spotsylvania County Schools for changing their policy concerning substitute teacher qualifications.
Prior to this change, substitutes needed a two-year degree to work in the county. While this policy had its positive points, it closed the door for a population of highly qualified individuals.
Our retired paraeducators could no longer substitute unless they had a two-year degree. These folks have years of experience working with our students. They possess an understanding of classroom expectations and professionalism not always found in some people who hold a two-year degree.
A strong substitute pool supports our efforts to make every day an academically positive day for our students.
