Elwood Shahan

Elwood "Woody" Shahan, 77, of Stafford County passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014.

Woody was born in Fellowsville, W.Va. In high school he played on the basketball team, where he still holds the record for highest points scored in a game, 42.

He earned a B.A. in physical education at Fairmont State. He taught and coached in Florida and West Virginia and earned his master's degree from WVU.

The family moved to Stafford in 1968, where Woody was the basketball coach, teacher and driver's ed instructor at Stafford High School until 1982, when he moved to the new North Stafford High School as athletic director. Woody retired in 1998. He had a record of 171-110 and led Stafford teams to three district titles and four trips to the regionals.

Survivors include his two sons, Scott (Suzanne) and Brad (Linda); daughter Tammy (Darrell); grandchildren Amber, Sarah, Lauren, Courtney, Andrew, Colby, Logan and Wilson; and great-grandchildren Delia, Aidan, Kaylie, Charlotte, Justin and Nicholas.

Woody was preceded in death by his wife, Laura and his parents.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Burial will be private. A casual reception will follow the service.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Woody Scholarship. Checks should be made out to Fiduciary Services Fund ("Woody" in the memo) and mailed to: Stafford County Public Schools, Attn: Finance Dept., 31 Stafford Ave., Stafford, VA 22554.
