Leah H. Jones

Leah Hockaday Jones, 89, of Spotsylvania County passed away Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center.

Leah was born in Spotsylvania County on Jan. 30, 1925, a daughter of Roderick and Lottie Hockaday. She married C. Medford Jones on June 7, 1957. Leah and Medford lived for many years in the Massaponax area, where they enjoyed being close to the family she loved and that she was so protective of.

Leah worked for many years for Waite Lumber Co. and the Department of Rehabilitative Services. Following her retirement, she entered a new phase of her life as she cared for her mother, Lottie Hockaday. During this time, Leah also selflessly took on the job of caregiver to her nephew Michael's children. She watched and cared for them as their parents worked. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sisters, Helen Longest of Tappahannock and Catharine Mathis of Woodford; brother W.P. Hockaday and his wife, Pauline, of Chesterfield; nephew Michael Mathis and his family, Carol, Amber, James, Robert and Emily, known as "her baby" to all who knew her; and her nephew Roderick's sons, Roderick Wayne Mathis II and Jeffery Mathis. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Medford Jones; her parents, Roderick and Lottie Hockaday; siblings Raymond Hockaday and Ruth Edenton; and nephew Roderick Wayne Mathis.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Spotsylvania Fire and Rescue, Box 818, Spotsylvania, VA 22553; to Fredericksburg Rescue Squad, Box 444, Fredericksburg, VA 22401; or to Bethany Baptist Church, Memorial Fund, 5001 Arcadia Road, Woodford, VA 22580.
