Retired Col. Robert William Germany "Bob" Jones, 82, of Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Petersburg to John Bolling Jones III and Frances Germany Jones, he lived the early years of his life in Monroe, La.
Bob attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and retired as a colonel from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1979, after proudly serving his country for 26 years.
During his retirement years, Bob loved traveling to other countries with his wife and friends. He freely gave his time to both the Lake of the Woods Lions Club and to The Lake of the Woods Multidenominational Church, where he served as an elder. Prior to becoming ill himself, Bob organized church efforts in the support and visitation of ill church members and routinely donated his time doing personal visitations. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf and gathering with friends to watch the Washington Redskins win or lose.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Dr. J.B. Jones.
He is survived by his traveling companion and wife of 59 years, Jacky Jones; his son, Robert "Bobby" Jones Jr. of Lake of the Woods; his daughter, Janie Lea Dean and her husband, Max, of Rural Retreat; brother Dr. Lealis Hale and his wife, Jacque, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; and many, many friends.
A private service will be held at Culpeper National Cemetery, Culpeper.
The family suggests memorial contributions in Bob's name be made to the Wounded Warriors Project. Sympathy cards may be sent to Ms. RWG Jones and family, 327 Birchside Circle, Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, VA 22508.
