Gil Kendall II

Capt. Arthur Gilman "Gil" Kendall II, 60, of Stafford County passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Kendall was a graduate of Stafford Senior High School and Germanna Community College. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved boating and golfing.

Mr. Kendall had retired from the Stafford County Sheriff's Office after 28 years of service. Capt. Kendall was the commander of the Sheriff's Office Court Services Division. He had a long and distinguished career in law enforcement, spanning more than 30 years. Capt. Kendall worked at the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office and the Fredericksburg Police Department before embarking on a 28-year career with the Stafford County Sheriff's Office in 1984. While at the Sheriff's Office, he served as a member of the Field Operations Division, the SWAT Team, a K-9 officer, a crime scene technician, the Criminal Investigations Division, the Marine Patrol, the Administrative Services Division and, finally, the Court Services Division.

Capt. Kendall was also a certified courthouse security assessor for the Commonwealth of Virginia. In this role, he was able to share his expertise and conduct security assessments for numerous localities all over the state that helped to better ensure the safety and security of judges, deputies, courthouse staff and visitors.

He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Sharon R. Kendall of Fredericksburg; daughter Heather Wenninger and her husband, Brandon, of Colonial Beach; son A. S. Kendall of Virginia Beach; stepson Justin Ward and his fiancee, Lauren, of Caroline County; mother-in-law Beverly Rawlings of Fredericksburg; father-in-law Don Rawlings Sr. and his wife, Alice, of Montross; sister-in-law Teri Reece of Fredericksburg; nephew Tyler Reece and his wife, Jackie, of Anchorage, Alaska; niece Morgan Reece of Fredericksburg; brother-in-law Don Rawlings Jr. and his wife, Lynne, of Rock Springs, Wyo.; four grandchildren, Kendall, Emily, Kaitlyn and Logan; and his chocolate Lab, Pebbles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Stuart "Sonny" Kendall and Jean Kendall.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A service will be held at noon Monday, March 24, at the funeral home chapel.

Inurnment will be private.
