Selective default fears

Republicans in the Virginia House of Delegates prefer that Virginians forfeit $2.8 billion of their federal taxes to other states rather than use their own money to expand Medicaid coverage to 400,000 uninsured Virginians, allegedly from fear that the U.S. government will default on its obligations to the commonwealth.

A 2009 Harvard study in the American Journal of Public Health documented 45,000 annual deaths in the U.S. caused by lack of health insurance; several other published studies have reported similar findings.

Republicans in the House of Delegates apparently do not have the same default anxieties regarding USDA subsidies for tobacco, with more than $12 million coming to Virginia in 2012 alone.

Every U.S. Surgeon General since Dr. Luther Terry in 1964 has deemed tobacco--which kills one-third of consistent users--the No. 1 preventable cause of death in America.

Republicans in the House of Delegates style themselves the "pro-life" party.

Things that make you go "hmmm"!
