John J. Barnes Sr.

John James Barnes Sr., 92, of Arlington County passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Mary Washington Hospital.

He is survived by daughters Kitsy Young of Montclair and Shirley Leonard of Front Royal; sons John James Barnes of Mechanicsville and Charles Barnes of Arlington; and his sister, Cecile Odom of Mobile, Ala. Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Kitsy Moody Barnes.

Mr. Barnes also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, Tres McEvoy, Shawn McEvoy and Dawn Jones of McLean, the three he raised, and Anthony Barnes, Jeff Beavers, Tori Barnes and Steve Barnes, Rachael Young, Mason Young and Beth Petersavage. He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Barnes was a devoted Catholic and a member of the Knights of Columbus. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Barnes fought bravely in the Battle of the Bulge. He was the president of Barnes Engineering and Science in Mobile. He retired from the federal government in 1987, after 42 years of service, many of which were spent at the Pentagon. He worked for the NASA program in 1968-1969. He was a past president of the Washington, D.C., Hypnotic Guild and a member of VFW and the American Legion.

The family will receive friends at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg.

Interment will follow at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Quantico National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus Council 4034, 4724 Harrison Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22408.
