Franklin Daniel Altman

Dan Altman, 86, a longtime resident of Fredericksburg, died at his home in Gaithersburg, Md., on Wednesday, March 5, 2014.

Dan was born in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 24, 1927. He served in the Marine Corps and spent several months in China after World War II. Shortly after returning, Dan married Verna, the love of his life. They were married 58 years before she preceded him in death. As a young adult, Dan became a faithful member and lay leader of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Dan gave 31 years of service as a ballistic physicist for the Naval Service Weapons Center in Dahlgren.

Dan enjoyed many hobbies, including growing roses, traveling, camping, boating and hiking the complete Virginia and Maryland parts of the Appalachian Trail. His greatest enjoyment was helping others. He and Verna spent thousands of hours over many years volunteering at the Adventist Community Center in Fredericksburg.

Dan is survived by his children Paul and Sharron Altman of Florida, Sharon and Conrad Hay of Maryland, Joy and David Slattery of Fredericksburg, David and Rose Eide-Altman of Maryland and Maryann and Bart Parrott of Charlottesville; 14 grandchildren, including Frank and John Altman, Melissa Villalobos and Michael and Molly Slattery; eight great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law Carol Altman. He was preceded in death by his wife; his eldest son, Frank Jr.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at the SDA Church, 6052 Plank Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22407-6234.
