Edwin F. Thompson

Edwin Francis Thompson, 83, of Caroline County passed away Friday, April 4, 2014, at Memorial Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Thompson was the founder and owner of E.F. Thompson Inc. in Massaponax. Following service with the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, Mr. Thompson started his business with one dump truck in Northern Virginia. In 1964, he began contracting with the U.S. Postal Service to haul mail in the Mid-Atlantic region. He moved the business to Massaponax in 1980. Today E.F. Thompson Inc. employs 150 people and provides transportation services for mail and general freight throughout the eastern United States.

Mr. Thompson was a committed follower of Jesus Christ. He served as a deacon at Bowling Green Baptist Church and Cardinal Baptist Church. He served two terms as moderator of the Herman Baptist Association. For many years, he led a Sunday worship service at the Petro truck stop in Ruther Glen.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jean L. Thompson of Woodford; sons Gary N. Thompson and his wife, Renae, of Spotsylvania County and Michael W. Thompson and his wife, Robyn, of Boston, Mass.; six grandchildren, Christopher Thompson, Catlyn Wright, Jonathan Thompson, Matthew Thompson, Bethany Thompson and Anna Thompson; and three great-grandchildren, William, Baylee and Kiley Wright.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Spotswood Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Memorial Park.
