We can't afford to add 11 million aliens

The cheapening of America by the Obama administration continues. On March 29, the vice president said in a prepared statement that 11 million undocumented aliens living here illegally are "already Americans!"

I hope that everyone understands how alarming this is. Over the 238-year history of this country, it has meant something to be an American. Now, if the administration gets its way, one need only sneak into the country, by hook or by crook, and once they are here shazam! They are Americans.

My father-in-law immigrated to this country from Italy in the 1950s. Becoming "Americanized" was difficult for him and for those with whom he immigrated. He had to learn a great deal about this country, had to speak English and struggled mightily, as did the 78,493,018 immigrants who arrived in the United States between 1820 and 2012 (Department of Homeland Security Statistics).

Being a U.S. citizen is a privilege to be granted only to those who are worthy. In the early 1980s, Fidel Castro emptied his prisons and discharged some of the sickest people from his hospitals. These people came to the U.S. with the blessing of President Carter.

If this were to happen again (as it did in 1994), would they be considered Americans just because they are on U.S. soil?

This is a move by the left to gain 11 million votes. It is despicable. We should let all immigrants to this country follow the laws already set up so that they follow a prescribed path to citizenship, ensuring that they will be productive members of society.

According to a Washington Post study, we borrow 46 cents of each dollar we spend. We are cutting the military. We are compromising on education. Taking on an additional 4 percent without being able to vet and screen them is not in our country's best interest!
