Darwin J. Young

Darwin Javins Young, 94, a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, entered eternal life on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at home in the presence of his family.

A self-educated carpenter, stonemason, auto mechanic and entrepreneur, Darwin joined the civil service as a journeyman toolmaker. As a production engineer for the U.S. Navy during World War II, Darwin worked on classified projects in armament design, winning Navy Service and Production awards. Darwin moved on to the Treasury Department after the war and retired in 1972 as Superintendent of Coining for the Philadelphia Mint.

Darwin is survived by his daughters, Rebecca Kreider and husband David of Fredericksburg and Ruth Brosig and husband Bob of Rochester, Mich.; grandchildren Rebecca M. Brosig, Robert M. Brosig, Joseph C. Kreider, Sarah J. Kreider and Michael D. Kreider; and many nieces and nephews.

Darwin was preceded in death by Ruth, his wife of 49 years; and his nine brothers and sisters.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 25, at Spotswood Baptist Church in Fredericksburg. Private interment will follow in Sydenstricker United Methodist Church cemetery in Springfield.
