The House of Delegates should pass the Marketplace Virginia health care plan as part of the commonwealth's budget.
Republican delegates can get ideological cover for an "aye" vote from Friedrich Hayek, who wrote on page 148 of his "The Road to Serfdom" (2007 edition) in favor of such a plan to provide security for those citizens rendered unable to work by sickness or accident. To quote:
"Nor is there any reason why the state should not assist the individuals in providing for those common hazards of life against which, because of their uncertainty, few individuals can make adequate provision."
Moreover, " there is no incompatibility in principle between the state's providing greater security in this way and the preservation of individual liberty."
Passage of Marketplace Virginia makes good business sense and good public policy.
