Jean L. Newton

Jean Layton Newton, 84, of the White Oak community of Stafford County passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at her home.

She is now reunited with her parents; loving husband of 24 years, Ralph "Pete" Newton Sr.; son Bernard Newton Sr.; and her six siblings.

Mrs. Newton was born and raised in downtown Fredericksburg. She married her first love, Pete. The two settled in White Oak, where Pete built their home and together they raised their five children. Throughout her life, she focused on her faith in God and her family, taking care of her husband, three sons and two daughters and, later, spending every possible moment with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Newton was a lifelong member of Bethel Baptist. She served as church secretary for 35 years. She shared her faith with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was highly regarded by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was the "rock" of her family, a true matriarch. She was and always will be loved very deeply by her family and will be dearly missed.

Mrs. Newton found great joy in gardening, bird watching, needlepoint, making quilts, throwing horseshoes, watching NASCAR and picking a pot of freshly steamed blue crabs.

Her spirit will be carried on by her two sons, Ralph Newton Jr. and wife Leslie of Richmond and Leroy Newton of Stafford; two daughters, Linda Whitaker and husband Knobby and Bridget Cropp, both of Spotsylvania County; grandchildren Lori, Brandie, "B," Andrew, Cale, Lesley, Josh, Allison, Zac and Jamie; and great-grandchildren Michael, Erin, Alexis, Caleb Jr., Kamryn and Emily.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 28, at Bethel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be made to White Oak Rescue Squad No. 7, 535 White Oak Road, Falmouth, VA 22405; or to White Oak Volunteer Fire Department, Company 7, 12 Newton Road, Falmouth, VA 22405.
