Elizabeth 'Bette' Wriska

Elizabeth Matilda "Bette" Wriska, 88, of Colonial Beach, born Oct. 5, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., passed away peacefully Monday, April 28, 2014.

She has been reunited with her husband of 51 years, Lou Wriska, who predeceased her almost 19 years ago. She also follows her mother and father; one grandson; and her only sister, Virginia, who left this Earth only six months earlier.

Bette is survived by four daughters, Sharon Smith of Lake Jackson, Texas, Mardell Wren of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Deborah Donnelly of Murrells Inlet and Elizabeth Bernstein of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

A child of the Great Depression, Bette grew up in Arnold, Md., and after graduating from high school at age 16, left home to work for the War Department in Washington, D.C. Following her marriage to Lou, a U.S. Navy sailor who joined the Army after the war, she lived and raised her girls in Germany, Formosa (Taiwan), Missouri and, principally in Alexandria. She retired after a long career at the Center for Naval Analysis in Arlington, and she and Lou then lived out their lives in Colonial Beach.

The family plans a private service with interment to follow at Arlington National Cemetery beside her beloved husband.

In lieu of flowers, they ask that donations be made to the Colonial Beach Rescue Squad, 225 Dennison St., Colonial Beach, VA 22443.
