Ellen Gouldman

Ellen Flemer Latane Gouldman died on Sunday, May 4, 2014, in Roanoke.

She was the daughter of James and Martchen Latane of Wakefield in Westmoreland County. She was predeceased by her husband, John Cheatham Gouldman; daughter Jacqueline Cheatham Gouldman; and her brother, James Wilson Latane.

Ellen graduated as valedictorian from Oak Grove High School. She had many fond memories of her years at the College of William & Mary, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She majored in chemistry and graduated with the class of 1937.

After college, she worked as a medical technician in Richmond and then moved home to the Northern Neck to work for Selective Service during World War II. Following the war, she worked for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service and then the Department of Social Services, where she retired as a superintendent.

Ellen was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Oak Grove and the first woman to serve on the vestry of that parish. She served as president of the Episcopal Church Women and was active in the Wakefield Club, the Home Demonstration Club, George Washington Memorial Association, Westmoreland Women's Club and the Northern Neck Historical Society.

Ellen loved to sew, read and spoil her grandchildren. Friends and family were always impressed with her boundless energy and carefree spontaneous nature. She had a great passion for travel and relished in sharing stories from her adventures abroad, but her home on the water at her beloved Blake's Point is where she was happiest.

Ellen will be remembered as a loyal and lifelong friend and a compassionate caregiver. Her generosity was immeasurable, her enthusiasm contagious. She was ageless and lighthearted, and brought fun and laughter to every occasion.

She is survived by her daughter Janet Gouldman Rutherford of Roanoke; grandchildren Erin Rutherford Bagnell and her husband, Edward Everett Bagnell, of Richmond, Meghan Rutherford Cochran and her husband, Brent Garreth Cochran, of Roanoke and William Vanston Rutherford of Bedford; and great-grandchildren Ellen Latane Bagnell, Anne Everett Bagnell and Estella Bruce Cochran.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Oak Grove.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Church in Oak Grove.

Arrangements are by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel and Crematory, oakeys.com.
