Frederick A. Phaler

Frederick "Freddie" A. Phaler Sr., 92, of Lake Winola, Pa., passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Commonwealth Hospice of NEPA. His wife was the late Alice "Judgie" Green who died in 1999.

Born in Dunmore, Pa., a son of the late Fred and Rhoda Blackmore Phaler and stepson of the late Sarah Hemler Phaler, Freddie resided there for 65 years before retiring to Lake Winola. He graduated from Dunmore High School in 1941 and attended Hampden-Sydney College. He was an avid baseball player and fan. He played second base for Dunmore High School and Hampden-Sydney College.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a petty officer first class during World War II. He had been employed as a truck driver for Preston Trucking Co., and was very proud to be a member of Preston's Million Mile Safe Driving Club, and could often be heard talking about it and showing off his membership card, which remained in his wallet. He was a member of Teamsters' Local 229. While living in Dunmore, he was a member of Dunmore Presbyterian Church.

Freddie was a loving and dedicated husband and father and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Surviving are a son, Frederick Jr. "Rick," of Lake Winola; a son, Bill and daughter-in-law Brenda of Dale City; and daughter Alice and son-in-law Mike Hincker of Salem. He had six grandchildren, Alex and Chris Hincker and Alicia, Adrienne, Ashley and Willie Phaler; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sister Olive and brother-in-law Donald Collins of Magnolia, N.J.; brother John and sister-in-law Betty Phaler of Blackwood, N.J.; sister-in-law Patty Green of Newport News; and sister-in-law Dottie and brother-in-law Bobby Glover of Portsmouth, Ohio.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home in Dunmore, with the Rev. Ken Forbes officiating. Interment will follow in Dunmore Cemetery.
