Evelyn P. Toney

Evelyn Payne Toney, 88, of Spotsylvania County passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Mrs. Toney worked as a secretary for Judge Bernard Coleman for several years and then retired as a deputy clerk for Spotsylvania County Circuit Court after working for more than 20 years. She was a member of the Fredericksburg Legal Secretaries Association and a member of Massaponax Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert L. Toney Jr.; a son-in-law, James M. Prince; and a brother, Thomas Y. Payne Jr.

Survivors include her four children, Donna Prince, Tom Toney and wife Nancy, Terri Craig and husband Logan and Chris Toney, all of Spotsylvania; five granddaughters, Jennifer Quinlan, Amy Horton, Carrie Mackie, Ellen McKenna and Emily Toney; three great-granddaughters; three great grandsons; brother Charles M. Payne and wife Marie of Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 24, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 25, at the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. John C. Edmonds officiating. Burial will follow in the Confederate Cemetery in Spotsylvania.
