Cemeteries are close, but separate

There was a mistake in the caption of a photo that appeared on page A8 of The Free Lance-Star on May 25.

The photo shows a representative of the Military Order of the Stars and Bars participating in a memorial ceremony.

However, contrary to the location listed in the caption, the ceremony actually occurred in the Fredericksburg City Cemetery, a separate cemetery adjacent to the Confederate Cemetery owned and maintained by the Fredericksburg City Cemetery Company, a nonprofit organization.

The City Cemetery predates the Confederate Cemetery by more than 20 years, but the close proximity of the two cemeteries often creates confusion. Along with a number of Confederate soldiers, some of Fredericksburg's most notable citizens lie in repose in the City Cemetery.

Thank you for the opportunity to correct this misinformation.
