Donna H. Chewning

Donna Harlow Chewning, 56, of Orange County passed away Friday, June 6, 2014, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Born May 10, 1958, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late James D. Harlow Jr., and Mary Agnes Gipson Harlow.

Donna was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Madison Run. She was also a member of the Commisioners of the Revenue Association, Virginia Association of Assessing Officers and Virginia Association of Local Elected Constitutional Officers. She started June 1, 1976, as a deputy commisioner of the revenue and became chief deputy commissioner of the revenue. Donna was elected commissioner of the revenue in 2003, and served Orange County since then.

Donna is survived by her mother, Mary Agnes Gipson Harlow of Orange; husband Warren Chewning of Orange; sons Bradley Warren Chewning and wife Melissa, and Jonathan Neil Chewning, all of Orange; one grandson, Eli Warren Chewning of Orange; five sisters, Brenda Thacker of Mineral, Ann Riordan and husband Bruce of Orange, Mary Ellen Thurman and husband Hugh of Orange, Mabel Twyman and husband Edwin of Madison, and Janet Talley of Louisa; aunt Jane Lutz and husband Reggie of Orange; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Besides her father, Donna was preceded in death by a sister, Judy H. Moubray.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 9, at Preddy Funeral Home, 250 W. Main St., Orange, with interment to follow in Graham Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Daryl Harbin will officiate. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life of Orange, 1445 E. Rio Road, Suite 104, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
