Doris D. Velona

Doris Douglas Velona, 88, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on Saturday, May 17, 2014, due to complications of COPD.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass., the eldest child of Leo and Maude Douglas. The family soon settled at Crystal Lake in Manchester, N.H.

During World War II, she received an appointment to the U.S. Weather Bureau as a junior meteorologist. As a young married woman, she worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce Census Bureau, while she returned to college and acquired a degree in economics, graduating cum laude from the University of Maryland. While working for the Department of Transportation, she was very proud of her assignment for 95 days at the Carter White House. During the time she worked for the government, she was also a member of the International Toastmistresses Council Nine, Blue Ridge Region, eventually attaining the office of council president.

She retired from DOT in 1982, at which time she and husband Walter Velona moved to Lake of the Woods, enjoying lakefront views, boating and swimming. Doris was very active in many organizations, including the Lions Club and Lioness Club (past president 1995-1996), the Players Group, Ladies Golf, the LOW Garden Club and various LOW committees. Their love of regular and duplicate bridge kept them very busy in several groups. She and Walter were also members of the LOW Fun Bowling League for 15 years.

Throughout her life, Doris took pleasure in conversation, reading, watching old movies and working The N.Y. Times and Washington Post Sunday crossword puzzles. She was most happy, however, with her family around her.
