The Rev. Dr. Nathaniel Young

The Rev. Dr. Nathaniel Young passed away June 10, 2014, at the age of 73.

He was born July 26, 1940, in Charleston, S.C. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics with honors from South Carolina State University and the following degrees from Fredericksburg Bible Institute and Seminary: Bachelor of Theology, Master of Theology, Doctor of Theology and Doctor of Religious Education. He was also an instructor at the Fredericksburg Bible Institute and Seminary and the Arm of the Lord Bible College.

He served in the U.S. Army as an air defense officer and worked for the Spotsylvania County school system for 21 years. In the ministry, he served as associate minister of Shiloh Baptist Church (New Site), pastor of Laurel Hill Baptist Church (14 years) and pastor of Beulah Baptist Church (11 years) up to the time of his passing. In service to his community, he served as immediate past president of Virginia State Conference NAACP and chairman of the Fredericksburg School Board, and he directed an after-school program for "at risk" students at Spotsylvania Middle and Courtland High schools.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carolyn Greene Young; son Nathaniel (Lynore), daughters Karen (Carlton) and Paula; brothers James (Thelma), William (Bernice) and Malcolm; granddaughters Jasmine and Janae; and a host of many other loving and devoted family, relatives and friends.

The wake ceremony will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, at Spotswood Baptist Church.
