Sheila Gordon Derryberry of Lake of the Woods passed away peaceably at her home on Thursday, June 26, 2014, surrounded by family members and her longtime friend Judy Jones. Sheila fought a courageous battle with lung cancer for over two and a half years.
She was born Dec. 16, 1943, in Wilkes Barre, Pa.
Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Jeul Gordon; and her two sisters, Marilyn Gelb and Lois King.
She grew up in Carbondale, Pa., and worked in her father's bakeshop. She graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School, Class of 1961, and then received an associate degree from a local community college.
Sheila was a single mom; she raised two sons while building a career at DynCorp, a worldwide corporation.
She worked for more than 25 years at DynCorp, starting as a secretary and then, assuming increasingly responsible jobs, became the facility manager for the corporate headquarters. There she managed the design and construction of hundreds of thousands square feet of office space. She also planned and managed the office moves of hundreds of employees, including multiple moves of the entire corporate headquarters, co-located subsidiary headquarters and inclusion of acquired companies.
Sheila was known for her love of family, especially her 16 grandchildren, her compassion for others and the strong friendships she developed over the years. She loved taking the grandchildren on the pontoon boat and watching them tube and swim in the lake. Sheila also loved traveling in the RV with her husband and beloved dog Rosie. She loved gardening and always had a beautiful flower garden. She was well known for the fantastic Christmas decorations in her home. Every room, nook and corner bore her tasteful touch. Her home was on the annual Lake of the Woods Christmas tour. The holiday parties she gave were a highlight of the season for friends and family. Her tasteful home decorations changed with the seasons.
She is survived by her husband, William Derryberry; son David Lentine and wife Kristen of Great Falls; son Erik Lentine and wife Bridget of Holly Springs, N.C.: and her beloved adopted cocker spaniel, Rosie.
She also leaves daughters-in-law Paige and Fred Weber of Redding, Calif., and Alisa and Jim Harriot of Reston.
Sheila is also survived by grandchildren Riley, Gracie, Faith (Erik), Tyler, Abbie (David), William, Callie, Brezny, Adam, Sara, Niah, Ruth Joy, Busi (Paige), James, Jackson and Erik (Alisa).
A memorial service will be held at Johnson Funeral Home at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 2. Burial will be the following day at Beth Emeth Memorial Park, Wilmington, Del.
