Withers W. Moncure Sr.

Withers Waller Moncure Sr. of Fredericksburg passed away Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Mr. Moncure was born Feb. 22, 1931, in Stafford County. He was a lifelong resident of Stafford and Fredericksburg. He was the son of the late Louis Avery Moncure Sr. and Lillian Berrey Moncure.

He was married to Patricia Middleton Moncure for over 63 years, and was a loving husband, grandfather and great-grandfather. Mr. Moncure was predeceased by his brother, Louis Avery Moncure Jr.; his daughter, Anne Byrd Moncure Payne; and a grandson, John Avery Payne.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his sons, Withers Waller Moncure Jr., and wife Vanessa of Fredericksburg, Richard Cassius Lee Moncure Sr., of Fredericksburg and Colonial Beach; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, William S. Middleton; and numerous relatives, including many friends who became a part of his extended family.

A graduate of Falmouth High School, Mr. Moncure also attended Fork Union Military Academy, The College of William and Mary and Randolph-Macon College. He was a co-founder of The Happy Clam Seafood Restaurants, a lifelong parishioner at historic Aquia Episcopal Church, a member of Fredericksburg Masonic Lodge 4 and Fredericksburg BPOE 875.

He will always be remembered for his great love of life, family and friends.

Visitation with the family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 7, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Aquia Episcopal Church, with a reception immediately following.
