Yesterday I had the honor and privilege to stand by with the Patriot Guard for Staff Sgt. David Stewart USMC and then escort him to his final resting place in Quantico National Cemetery. I try to do as many of these missions as possible to honor our fallen heroes, and they are always very moving. This one was no different, very emotional, with friends and family paying their respects and saying goodbye while we stand silently by.
I managed to keep my emotions in check through the carrying of the flag-draped coffin by the young Marines, the bagpipes playing "Amazing Grace," the 21-gun salute and the haunting refrain of taps, standing stoic and respectful in the heat. Even as they placed the casket over the open grave and everyone stepped forward to place a flower or memento on top of it, I stood with dry eye. Until the young wife stepped up with the two young children and was trying to explain to the daughter who was maybe 3 years old that Daddy was in the box and not coming out
Man, where do you go with that?
