Rep. Rob Wittman has descended to the depths of fecklessness by signing the House Republicans' letter demanding that President Obama cancel Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
It allows young people whose parents brought them to the U.S. as children and who meet specific criteria to apply for temporary residence status.
Otherwise, they face the prospect of immediate deportation to a country they might not remember and know little about.
House Republicans insist that DACA is to blame for the recent sharp increase in child refugees from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, where they are threatened by escalating
The Republicans' claim is belied by the fact that no such increase has occurred from other countries in the region, such as Mexico, where migrants have historically entered the U.S. without documentation.
Rep. Wittman can restore his reputation and his future prospects by withdrawing his signature from this ill-conceived and politically motivated letter. It could well come back to haunt him in the next election.
