Thomas W. Oesterheld, 75, faithful husband, loving father, longtime fire chief and loyal friend passed away Saturday, July 19, 2014, at his home.
Mr. Oesterheld was a native of Spotsylvania County and a graduate of Spotsylvania High School. He retired from VDOT in 1992 after 37 years as an inspector. Mr. Oesterheld joined the Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department in 1961, and became the youngest fire chief in Virginia in 1964. He served as chief until November 2013. When he retired he was the second oldest chief in the state.
Thomas was beloved by the firefighters of his home county. He devoted his life to ensuring that Spotsylvania County was protected by the finest firefighters in the state. At home, he raised three loving children with his wife of 54 years. He loved to fish, loved to garden and loved to cook, hosting Sunday family dinners at home every weekend for 40 years. He loved the sounds of his family spending time together and his young grandsons playing.
Thomas was generous with his time, generous with his heart, generous with advice and eager to help anyone that ever needed it.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Lucretia H. Oesterheld; three children, Kristal O. Coleman and husband Ricky of Spotsylvania, Rondah O. Lamarche and husband Maurice of Richmond and Patric Oesterheld and wife Jodie of Spotsylvania; two grandsons, Cameron Oesterheld and Roman Lamarche; brother Carlton Oesterheld and wife Brenda of Spotsylvania; nephew Jason Oesterheld, his wife Missy, and their daughter, Olivia; and his best friend, Norman Brooks of Spotsylvania.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
