Betty J. Sickmann

Betty Jean Sickmann, 87, of Locust Grove passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at Dogwood Village of Orange County.

Born Dec. 31, 1926, on the family farm in Sheridan Township, Redwood County, Minn., Betty attended Mankato State College, and later received her bachelor's degree from George Mason University. She loved children and taught school for 40 years, beginning as the instructor in a one-room schoolhouse, and ending her career as a kindergarten teacher for Prince William County public schools. Betty was active in the Presbyterian church and was a member of Spotsylvania (now Hope) Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Hubert, and by her parents, Agnes Fuhr Davis and Clyde Davis.

Betty is survived by daughters Dr. Cynthia Simms of San Mateo, Calif.; Bonnie Chadwick of Locust Grove; Penny Parker and her husband, David, of Manassas; five granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and 19 nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at Johnson Funeral Home, 31440 Constitution Highway, Locust Grove. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Hope Presbyterian Church, 11121 Leavells Road, Fredericksburg. Interment will follow at Culpeper National Cemetery. The Rev. Alan Hagar will officiate.
